What Do I Need To Get Broadband Connection?

Broadband offers a high speed way for you to access the Internet, which is considerably faster and more reliable that the older style dial-up service, and as broadband is always connected, you will not pay for the time you spend on the Internet but instead you will be charged a flat rate monthly fee, and this can be a cost effective way for high level Internet users to access the web.  Broadband is widely available as ADSL and cable, and if you live in a town or city, or a densely populated rural district, then you should be able to get access to affordable broadband services in your area.  Here are just some of the factors you will need to consider when you are setting up your broadband service.

Coverage
In order for you to get broadband Internet in your home you will have to check whether or not there is any broadband coverage in your area, and you can do this by visiting the provider’s websites and using the search functions provided to check your town or postcode against service availability, or if you do not have any access to the Internet you can contact the providers directly by telephone.

Equipment
You will need specialist equipment to use broadband, and this will include an ADSL or cable modem/router.  Some ISP’s will provide you with a complimentary router when you sign up to a broadband package, which will either be delivered to you or installed by an engineer, or you can buy the relevant equipment from any good computer hardware shop for around $50 (£30).  You will need to check with your ISP before you buy any equipment for your broadband service to ensure you are getting a compatible product.

Microfilters
If you are using ADSL then data will be streamed through your telephone lines, so you will need microfilters fitted on your extension sockets to filter out any background sound that could be caused by the Internet connection, which could interfere with other equipment plugged into this service such as telephones and fax machines.
